The Long-Awaited Step

Some journeys begin with a single step.

Others begin with a lifetime of waiting.

There are books we choose to write.

Then there are books that quietly choose us, waiting patiently until we have become the person capable of writing them.

Crossing the Kidron Valley has been such a book for me.

Its first seeds were planted in childhood as my grandfather spoke Psalm 23 while we drove the hills of Missouri. They grew quietly through classrooms, television studios, prison chapels, friendships, valleys, and years that I could not then have understood.

Today, at last, I watched the Shepherd take His first step into the Kidron.

In some quiet way, I felt I had reached that place with Him.

Not because the journey is finished.

Because it has truly begun.

There are moments when a writer lays down his pen with gratitude rather than accomplishment.

This is one of them.
